City with Dwellings operates a winter emergency or “White Flag” shelter, which keeps people living outside safe when weather conditions become dangerous. It has already been a cold winter and there have been nights when we have missed the call to open, resulting in unnecessary suffering for those seeking to get out of the cold. We have apologized to our neighbors experiencing homelessness, and we have adapted our opening guidelines to ensure our neighbors are safe during inclement weather. This shift will result in more nights of shelter for our neighbors.
Old Opening Guideline:
· Shelter opens on nights when the temperature is predicted to fall below 32 degrees (or 38 degrees with precipitation) between the hours of 8:00 pm and 5:00 am.*
New Opening Guideline:
· Shelter opens on nights when the temperature is predicted to fall below 32 degrees (or 38 degrees with precipitation), between the hours of 8:00 pm and 7:30 am.*
Thank you to our volunteers, donors, and staff, all of whom make it possible to operate the emergency shelter and provide hope to those we serve. Working together, we can become a community with safe and secure dwellings for all.
*We use Weather Underground to help us make the best decision possible each night about whether or not to open.
